ArchiMate: The Next Big Thing in Enterprise Architecture

ArchiMate is a visual language for modelling, analysing and visualising enterprise architectures, adopted as an international standard by the OpenGroup (which also owns the TOGAF standard) in 2009. It is the third major development in the enterprise architecture field since the Zachman framework in 1987 (which established the enterprise architecture field) and the TOGAF framework in 1995. Effectively, it puts “meat on the bones” of the Zachman framework, by providing both a metamodel and visual modelling notation in addition to an architectural framework. It was developed as the result of collaborative project involving research institutes, commercial organisations, government departments and IT vendors. It provides enterprise architects with a common language – something they have never had before – and has the potential to unite the field in the same way UML has done in software engineering and BPMN has done in business process modelling. ArchiMate provides an open, non-proprietary language for modelling enterprise architectures: like UML and BPMN it is free-to-use. It is complementary to the TOGAF framework: TOGAF provides a process for developing enterprise architectures, while ArchiMate provides a language for representing enterprise architectures (product). It provides a complete solution to the problem of enterprise architecture as it includes an architectural framework, a metamodel, visual notation and 3rd party tool support. The goal of this presentation is to provide a primer on ArchiMate for organisations and practitioners interested in adopting it.
